The Portsmouth Community Colored Library Museum

IMG_20150808_151736_691-1.jpg

The Portsmouth Community Colored Library Museum, located in Portsmouth VA tells the story of its history as a segregated library in the Jim Crow south. Here is a tie between early enslaved Aftricans not being taught to read and/or write, to a time when education was available to African Americans, but limitied, to today where there is a movement to provide historically accurate and relevant stories within the experience of African Americans and other minority or underserved groups. With this in mind, the museum displays artifacts that represent the time when slavery was active, to a time when educating future generations of those same people was of high importance. Also included are examples of the contributions of specific pioneering individuals who worked toward the task of integrating educational opportunities through an integrated library system.

IMG_20181218_153757991.jpg

This exhibit shows the "Slave Bible," photographed as it was presented at the Museum of the Bible in Washington DC, on December 18, 2018. It was loaned to the museum from Fisk University, and the exhibition is scheduled to run from November 28, 2018 through September 1, 2019.

Learn more about this unique bible on the museum website here, and we encourage you to visit the museum if you are in the area. It's huge, so be prepared to spend hours there, and know that one day may not be enough to take in all of the information and learning opportunities that they have to offer. At the time of this visit, when the photos presented were taken, they were offering free return visits within a specific time period of the initial museum ticket purchase. Check with them for current offers.
