"Paul Pivart is the sturdy little mascot for Company "E" of the 166th infantry. He was wearing a suit made of a piece of old tent cloth brought home by his father on his last "permission" in 1916. After that the father disappeared and no news of him has ever reached his family. His big silver watch which still "marches well" is the little son's most treasured possession. He wore it beacuse his picture was to be taken for his "god-fathers." Paul lives at Caen in the Place de la Reine Mathilde, and goes to Vacation School. It costs 6 francs a month, which is paid by his American God-fathers of the Ohio Rainbow Reveille. The AMERICAN RED CROSS administers the funds for the maintanence of all the children adopted by the American troops" Library of Congress

"The Norton boys and father on the way home to dinner. Smallest boy Edgar been sweeping 3 months in Saxon Mill, Spartanberg. Makes about 40 cents a day. His brother makes 60 cents. Father works in the spool room . Mother and 3 children at home. Father said Eddie is a hard worker. The mother told me later when I had to see the family record "The bible's here but the record, hits done got torn up." She said the boys were 12 and 13 years old. "The Yelverton Family. Ten in the family. Live in a six-room house, "The only one on the street," they told me repeatedly. Two years ago the came here from the farm fifty miles away and a mile from the R.R. where they owned 135 acres. Father and four oldest boys have been working in the Laurel Cotton Mills for two years. Father said, "the little girls don't work, an' we're not goin' to let 'em if we can help it. We'll send 'em to school an' make ladies out of em. I don't reckon we'll ever go back to the farm. They all like the mill work. It's light work, but not very healthy though." The boys said, "We'd ruther work in the mill, It's easier. No hot sun an' no cold in winter 'cause they heat the mill then." The two youngest boys, eleven and thirteen years old, the father said, have been in the mill two years, and have had almost no schooling, and no likelihood of getting any more. The mother said, "I don't like to live in the city near so well. We're more shut in, an' we can't give the boys the schoolin' they ought to have 'cause they've got to work in the mill (wages is so low). We haven't been so well as on the farm." "Roger Lang is only 14 years old but even so, he wants to fight for France, and he wants to avenge his mother who died from fright one night during a bombardment, and his father who went to the front in 1914 and has never come back. The boy has been adopted by the 101st Machine Gun Battalion. Thanks to the money which they have sent him, he will go to a trade school and then he will be able to support his little brother Pierre. For the war will surely be over before Roger's class is called, and then he and Pierre can go back to Lorraine, which is their home even if their house is destroyed and even if the father and mother are both gone.
